How Safe Is the MMR Vaccine? Scientific Facts vs Common Myths

How Safe Is the MMR Vaccine? MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) is one of the vaccines that have received the greatest attention throughout medical history. Although there is overwhelming scientific evidence that it is safe, myths have persisted as a cause of suspicion both among parents and adults.

What Is the MMR Vaccine?

The MMR vaccine protects against:

  • Measles
  • Mumps
  • Rubella

The recommended dosage is generally two times during childhood and it provides long-term immunity in over 97 percent of patients.

Is the MMR Vaccine Safe?

Yes. Millions of children in many countries have been studied through extensive research which has proved:

  • No link to autism
  • No consequences on child development.
  • Extremely uncommon severe side effects.

This initial researched work which wrongly attributed MMR to autism has been long since debunked and withdrawn and its author sanctioned as a medical practitioner.

Common Myths Explained and How Safe Is the MMR Vaccine?

Myth 1: Natural infection is superior to vaccination.

Fact: Natural measles infection is linked to grave threat up to death. Vaccination provides immunity which does not come with the risks of disease.

Myth 2: Excessive vaccination raises the immune system to too high a level.

Fact: One would have to deal with hundreds of antigens per day in the immune system of a child. Vaccines only reflect a minor proportion of this exposure.

Myth 3: Vaccines are the cause of long-term health issues.

Fact: To such a claim there is no medical support which can be considered credible. Long term complications are not associated with vaccines but with diseases.

Possible Side Effects

The vast majority of the side effects are mild and short-term:

  • Mild fever
  • Rash
  • Soreness at injection site

Anaphylaxis is very unlikely to occur- rarer than measles complications.

Medical Authority View

There is a strong recommendation of MMR vaccination as an essential step of public health protection by WHO, CDC, UNICEF, and the Indian Academy of Pediatrics.

Bottom Line

MMR vaccine is safe, efficient and life saving. The actual threat is the lack of vaccination.
