Schedule H1 Drug List With Brand Names (PDF Download). Schedule H1 drugs are accordance drugs of prescription medicine that are regulated under the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, 1945 in India. These are mostly antibiotics, anti-tuberculosis drugs and some psychotropic medicines which should be under strict supervision to avoid indiscriminate use and development of antibiotic resistance.

Pharmacies should have independent book that holds patient information, prescription by a doctor and dispensing information when the Schedule H1 medicines are sold.

The full Schedule H1 drug list can be also downloaded at the bottom of this article.

What Are Schedule H1 Drugs?

In 2014, the Government of India implemented Schedule H1 allowing to regulate the use of strong antibiotics and some psychiatric drugs.

These drugs:

  • Demand a valid prescription of a registered medical practitioner.
  • Cannot be sold without prescription
  • Should bear a label of red box warning.
  • Pharmacists must record in Schedule H1 register.

At the label usually appears the warning:

Box H1 Drug – Warning: It is menacing to intake this preparation outside of the directions that the doctor provides.

Why Schedule H1 Drugs Are Strictly Controlled

The regulation of these medicines has a number of significant reasons.

1. Prevent Antibiotic Resistance

The Schedule H1 drugs include numerous potent antibiotics. The antibiotics may be abused and this results in the resistance of antibiotics whereby the bacteria become resistant to treatment.

2. Prevent Self-Medication

On prescription, patients tend to purchase antibiotics. The schedule H1 regulations decrease self-medication and misuse.

3. Monitor Psychiatric Medicines

To avoid inappropriate use and addiction, some antipsychotic drugs are incorporated.

4. Improve Pharmacovigilance

Documenting the patient data assists in monitoring the safety and adverse reactions of a drug.
